Wait a second though.. im an it contractor, if i dont work i dont get paid - any broken bones are seriously going to mess with my income.. Also I have to take must have technical equipment with me so i can keep in touch with the world back home. Plus the digi camera and ipod of course..
What insurance policy covers all this? Answer - none... Why cant I find an insurance policy to support the self employed when they go skiing?

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
An old one but a gold one.
Pop quiz hot shot. Your reinstalling Windows XP on one of your machines (because none of your drivers support Vista and also all your legacy programming wont work on vista...)
Which power toys do you add?
Answers:
a: Clear type tuner - without a doubt
b:Alt-Tab replacement
c: Raw image thumbnailer
d: Tweak UI
e: Color control panel applet
f:Image resizer
g: open command window here
Thats right - most of them!

cpCommerce - OpenSourceCMS
OpenSourceCMS
Try before you dont buy.. A great site for trying out the various CMS (content management system) installs that are available in open source software. Fantastic idea, saves a lot of time setting up systems in order to trial them.
The way the site works is simplicity itself, a selection of open source systems are setup with admin passwords available for you to try them out. The site has a countdown of 2 hours in which you can play to your hearts content - once the two hours is up all the CMS reset back to standard build, ready for everyone to play again.
Its not all heart - the site offers reasonably priced hosting services as well so once youve chosen the CMS that works you can go on and deploy it.
Downside - I dont see any dot net CMS systems...

Welcome to Toppy.org.uk
Toppy.org.uk
A toppy is a topfield hard disk recorder for digital terrestial broadcasts - e.g. a freeview box!
toppys are great devices as standard, a nice looking bit of kit with twin tuners so you can record two programs at once and watch another (if its on the same mux) or you can watch one record one.
What makes it a great bit of kit though is that if you go to toppy.org.uk you can download countless apps which you can install onto your toppy to make it even better.. one such app is my stuff, my stuff is an enhancement to the epg guide which comes as standard with the topfield, it adds icons for the channels to make it more like sky plus and it makes it easier to set series recordings and key word recordings.
Ideal to make sure you dont miss dr who......

Initially im intrigued, still working out what half of it is about though so writing on here to remind me to have another look...
Bits of it ive found useful are:
Link to validation sites - it will submit the page you are looking at to be validated so you can see what youve done wrong (again)
Resize to screen res's see what it looks like when its not in widescreen
clear cookies just for the page you want to clear cookies for
A ruler to measure bits!! surprisingly useful.
Web resources ive found are:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2007/05/10/Internet-Explorer-Developer-Toolbar-_2D00_-Get-It-Now_2100_.aspx
Mainly people moaning that it isnt as good as firefox, there may be something useful in this eventually...
http://www.15seconds.com/issue/070208.htm - 15 seconds is good - but i must read slow cause this took me more like a couple of minutes to read....

Quick License Manager - Reviews and free downloads at Download.com
Interactive Studios Quick Licence manager
How to handle licencing? Its the age old question - do you write a bit of code to handle it yourself, or do you farm it out to someone else? Heres an example of farmed out code that looks useful
Quick licence manager seems to tick all the boxes, it enables you to create computer bound licence keys - bound to the name of the computer. It enables you to create evaluation keys with date bound expiration
Its only $69
Its probably easily hackable by the code kiddies out there but it will be enough to stop average jo from cheating you out of your money....
Its less life consuming than writing your own and watching that get hacked as well
nuff said, im going to try it, i'll let you know how it goes.

Javascript for putting a cookie and retrieving a cookie
Someone asked me the other day how to save a cookie via javascript, then retrieve said cookie to display the users name..
Simple right? I couldnt remember javascript at all to be honest - but i found this article:

Suddenly it all made sense again!

Source code versioning and sharing - simply?
Well.. I need to implement some kind of source control - im working on a project which will require the input of a team of two, sharing files over adsl connection -
http://subversion.tigris.org/ Subversion is what im looking into.
Id like to make it portable and scalable as im fed up of managing installs again and again - so im going to build a virtual machine to host it.
Technologies that im going to use:
VMware,
Redhat linux fedora core,
Subversion.
Coding environment that im aiming to support:
Asp.net (vb)
Html
SQL server 2005
Users:
One person coding
One person carrying out html design changes
Articles and useful links:
A useful article on interfacing with dot net http://www.codeproject.com/dotnet/file_diff_and_webreports.asp
Another useful article on interfacing with dot net
http://morph.telspace.co.za/docs/SVN4VSdotNet.php
Subversion toolset for interfacing with dot net
http://ankhsvn.tigris.org/
Looking at how to interface SQL with subversion (not 2005 but i will look at that later)
http://www.codeproject.com/cs/database/ScriptDB4Svn.asp
Stage 1:
Downloaded and installed: VMware server (free from www.vmware.com)
Linux - red hat fedora core 6 dvd from www.redhat.com - again free. This takes days to download...
Created a new virtual machine - settings were:
Memory 192mb (this was reccomended)
Disk drive 8gb (default - can change this at a later point) - one gotcha that caused problems at first was that you have to make sure you choose the lsi logic scsi option, i used the default and then was told by fedora core installer that the disk couldnt be recognised.
Once the machine created i pointed the cdrom at the iso image of red hat fedora downloaded as above and then started the machine. At this point the install for fedora started running through.
I'll keep you posted on how it goes...

New year planning
Its the new year, time for new changes. Its easy to drift along, however you arent necessarily going to get where you want to go. So, i thought id put a bit of structure behind my planning for my new years resolutions.
Below are a list of the articles Ive found to help me with this and my comments on them.
Basic Overview of Varous Strategic Planning Models Some useful models showing how businesses might approach planning - This is useful for the long term game plan.
http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2005/04/30-days-to-success/ A useful approach for changing ways - maybe? I'll try and incorporate this into my plan for anything I identify that requires a major effort to change.
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=76 tips on career planning
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=78 more tips on planning
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=80 and more
http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/career/?p=82 and more...!
Topics that will be included in the planning:
Overall game plan
Where do I want to be in 3 months, 6 months, a year, 3 years, 5 years.
Mission statement
The overall plan will then be decomposed into objectives for the below categories.
Finance
Hope someone finds this useful
